God and the Spider

During World War II, a US marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades.

Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed.

As he waited, he prayed, "Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen."

After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, "Well, I guess the Lord isn't going to help me out of this one." Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave.

As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.

"Hah, he thought. "What I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor."

As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while.

"Lord, forgive me," prayed the young man. "I had forgotten that in you a spider's web is stronger than a brick wall."

We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget what God can work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. And remember with God, a mere spider's web becomes a brick wall of protection.

Ash Wednesday Service
Feb. 25th, 6:00pm @ Presley Chapel UMC

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the church season called Lent. “Lent” is an old English word for spring, and it designates a 40-day period before Easter (excluding Sundays) where Christians are invited to strengthen their life-giving connection to the Risen Christ through taking up a special spiritual practice or giving up something in order to jolt us out of our routine and awaken us to deeper levels of awareness of God’s sacrificial love for us. At the service the churches will be challenged with a church-wide spiritual practice.

The service will be brief (about 30 minutes), and will involve the invitation for you to come forward and have your forehead marked with ashes in the sign of the cross. Ashes in the Bible represent repentance and mortality. This act of worship is a way of centering our lives on the love of God that conquers sin and death.

Thinking is Thanking

There's a German saying attributed to Martin Heidegger: denken ist danken. In English that translates to "thinking is thanking." We won't go into Heidegger's existential philosophy (aren't you glad?) but when it comes to this "thinking is thanking" thing, he's on to something.

Even when times are hard, there is so much to be thankful for. If you think about it long enough, you'll be able to come up with something...even if it's just that things could be worse. The key is actually thinking about it. It's a choice; one you'll have to make for yourself even if everyone around you chooses to be negative. Wondering if the choice to be thankful is the right one? God thinks so. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks whatever happens. That is what God wants for you in Christ Jesus."

Look for things to be thankful for (rather than things to complain about) and you'll feel better, look better (fewer frowny-face wrinkles!), and be a lot more fun to be around. Having trouble getting started? Here's a freebie: God knows everything about you and loves you anyway. Isn't that reason enough to be thankful?

Think about it.

Working Replica of Noah's Ark Opens In Schagen, Netherlands

This is truly amazing! Cannot even imagine the work, time, and money that went into this venture. It's also amazing to see how large this is - and that the fact it is to scale of biblical times. Enjoy.

The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday for the first crowd of curious Pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.

Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark, built by Dutch Creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

The ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house..

Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold. A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine. Biblical Scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been..

Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and with occasional help from his son Roy.

Construction began in May 2005. On the uncovered top deck - not quite ready in time for the opening - will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs and chickens, and goats, and one camel. Visitors on the first day were stunned. 'It's past comprehension, ' said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw The ark looming over the local landscape. 'I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big.'

There is enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater where kids can watch a video that tells the story of Noah and his ark.

Huibers said he hopes the project will renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, where church going has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years. ''If You Need Help, Ask God. The purpose of this meeting is to set our ministry goals for next year, in preparation for our Charge Conference (Tuesday, November 18th, 6 p.m. at HUMC). The theme of this year's Charge Conference is "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations." These practices are: Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, and Extravagant Generosity. Dear Friends:
I was asked the other day, “Why is your church so opposed to the lottery?”

The United Methodist Church opposes gambling in all its forms because we believe that it violates the spirit and the imperative contained in Jesus’ words: “… you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-30). Gambling violates this commandment.

Because gambling is based on human greed, it replaces God with an avaricious desire to get rich quick. Wealth becomes more important than God. In that sense, it violates the first of the Ten Commandments as well. It also violates the gift of the mind which God has given. If you do the math, most of the money spent on so-called “educational” lotteries goes not to education but to prizes and administration and profits for some company. It makes no financial sense.

Gambling also preys on the neighbor, even if you don’t place a bet or buy a ticket yourself. When I lived in El Paso, Texas, the Texas Lottery was begun. In the first week of the lottery, the poorest precinct in El Paso was the highest per capita participant in the state of Texas. There is no impulse to “love your neighbor as yourself” when you encourage or allow systems of regressive taxation and practices that are demeaning and destructive to the fabric of life and to the fabric of the community. The lottery is a cruel joke that masquerades as a civic necessity and a public service, all the while preying on those least able to tolerate the loss of money that must inevitably come from gambling. Gambling is morally and ethically bankrupt.

I will not be buying a lottery ticket. A very small percentage of the money goes to scholarships after the prizes are given and the administration of the lottery is funded and the profit of those running the lottery assured. Because I do believe in the importance of education, I will continue to make a yearly donation to Hendrix College and my other alma maters. I will be giving to Hendrix or one of “my” schools where allmy money will support the student, and not support greed.

Frankly, in a day when in the political sphere we talk much of family values, I cannot understand how government can even begin to sponsor or tolerate practices or programs that feed on human weakness. I cannot understand how government and responsible civic leaders would want to encourage a “something for nothing” philosophy — particularly in a country where we affirm and value work.

My prayer is that each one of you will act to defeat the allowance of a practice that is demeaning, regressive, antithetical to our faith, irresponsible in good government, and damaging to the human spirit and the human community.

Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Sermon Notes:
The Lord's Prayer: "Our Father"

Jesus gave his followers a model for how they are to pray, known as "The Lord's Prayer", which can be found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4.

Our image of God is the most important thing about us. We can pick up many distorted images of God throughout our life. As Christians, we are called to let Jesus show us what God is really like, and to let go of any images that do not line up with the revelation of God in Jesus Christ.

Jesus teaches us to pray to God as "Our Father". What is this Father like? Like no earthly father, no matter how loving he is! Jesus tells us about our Father in Luke 15:11-32. This story that Jesus told is actually a creative commentary on a passage of Scripture from Hosea 11:1-11. Hosea, a prophet, describes God as like a loving parent whose compassion drowns out his anger at his children's wrongdoing.

The people started coming at 7 a.m. and we locked the door behind someone at 5 p.m. Lots and lots of bags of treasures were sold for $3.00 per bag...over $400.oo worth of treasures!! Thank you to everyone who brought stuff for the sale.

Forbidden Fruit

Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to God's kids.

After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve.
And the first thing He said to them was: "Don't."
"Don't what?" Adam replied.
"Don't eat the forbidden fruit," God said.
"Forbidden fruit? We got forbidden fruit? Hey, Eve...we got Forbidden Fruit!"
"No way!"
"Yes WAY!"
"Don't eat that fruit!" said God.
"Why?"
"Because I'm your Father and I said so!" said God, wondering why he hadn't stopped after making the elephants.

A few minutes later, God saw the kids having an apple break and was angry.
"Didn't I tell you not to eat that fruit?" the First Parent asked.
"Uh huh," Adam replied.
"Then why did you?"
"I dunno," Eve answered.
"She started it!" Adam said.
"Did not!"
"DID so!"
"DID NOT!!"

Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own.

Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

Prayer Request

Please include the family, friends and co-workers of Heidi Meyer in your prayers. Some of you may have seen on the news the story about the Bentonville teacher who passed away suddenly at work on Friday (www.4029tv.com/video/17210285/index.html) - that was Heidi. She was only 36 years old. Her husband, Donovan Meyer, and her brother, Bret Bottomley, were classmates of mine at Eureka Springs High School. Donovan and Heidi have a two year old daughter, Avery.

Heidi and Bret lost their mother, Alice, after a long, hard battle with cancer just after Avery was born. The family is still recovering from that loss, so Heidi's passing will be very, very hard on them. (Heidi was her mom remade...she looked, sounded and acted like her and she was a school teacher like her.)

Another classmate of ours, Stephanie Lane, is also a teacher at Bentonville Schools. She worked with Heidi and was there when she died.

All prayers for this family will be greatly appreciated.

Cross Ministries in Groom, Texas

These scenes are located about 70 miles East of Amarillo on I40 near the town of Groom, Texas. These metal sculptures are of the crucifixion of Christ. They are a labor of love by a man from Amarillo. Someone donated the land on which to errect them. The large cross is also made from metal. A Hunger for God

Matthew 6:16-18

Jesus assumed his followers would fast. Fasting has been a central part of Christian living for centuries. So why have I never heard of it?

Historical reason: The Protestant Reformation
Contemporary reason: Fast-food culture

But what is the point? What “reward” could there be for intentionally abstaining from eating for a set period of time? What good can it do?

To develop more self-control.

Good Morning and Welcome

Welcome to Huntsville United Methodist Church. It is our prayer that you will find here a worshipful atmosphere, a friendly Christian welcome and an inspiration for service in His Name. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to join our fellowship.

There is a nursery available for children age 6 and under.

Visitors, please sign the attendance pads located at the end of each pew and fill out a visitor card (also located in the pew). There are Prayer Cards available if you have a prayer request. Fill out the card and place it in the offering plate or hand it to the Pastor.

Today after worship, there will be a brief organizational meeting for anyone who is interested in volunteering to help with Kid’s Club.

The Bible Study on the book of Acts will continue this evening at 5:30 p.m.

The UMW will be having a Rummage Sale in the Fellowship Hall on Friday the 22nd from 7—5 and Saturday the 23rd from 7—2. Donations of items to sell are needed. Donations can be brought by the church anytime this week.

The Youth Coffee House will be open on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons from 3:30—6:30 p.m. and Friday evenings from 7—10 p.m. this summer for movies, snacks and fellowship.

Happy Birthday to Jeff Griffin on the 17th, Josephine Dillahunty on the 18th and Alyvia Brodersen on the 22nd. Happy Anniversary to Mitch & Julie Myrick on the 18th, Steven & Leah Davis on the 20th and Jeff & Priscilla Griffin on the 21st.

On the day of the assignment, the first child stood up and said, "My name is Joshua. I go to Beth Shalom. I am Jewish and this is a Star of David."

The second child stood and said, "My name is Marguerite. I go to St. Mary's. I am Catholic and this is a crucifix."

The third child stood up and said, "My name is Fred. I go to Grace Church. I am Methodist and this is a casserole."

Running on Empty

If I'm running on empty in my Christian life,

If I yell at my kids, if I put down my wife,

If my home is a mess and I'm down in the dumps,

If I've got a good case of the spiritual mumps!

If I'm running on empty, burnt out and sad,

If I'm feeling rejected, frustrated and mad,

If I'm angry that God hasn't answered my prayers,

That He's left me to carry my problems and cares . . .

Then I need to stay still and stop running away

From His cool Word of peace in the heat of the day.

If I'd open my heart to the Spirit's control

It wouldn't take long till the Lord filled my soul!

UMW Rummage Sale

The United Methodist Women will be having a Rummage Sale on Friday, August 22nd and Saturday, August 23rd in the church Fellowship Hall. Clean out your attics, basements and garages...Donations of items for the sale are needed! Donations can be dropped off at the church anytime between now and the 21st. The United Methodist Women hosted a Baked Potato and Salad Bar Lunch fundraiser on July 27th. Thanks to everyone's generosity, $320.00 was made at this event! Half of this money will be used to pay their Pledge to Missions and the other half will be donated to the Kid's Club for start-up expenses.

Meditation Garden Makeover

Our Meditation Garden recently got a facelift thanks to the hard work of

Phil and Helen Atkinson.

A big umbrella has been added to the table to provide some much needed shade. A fountain and some new plants were also included in the makeover. Helen hopes to add a tree later this fall for some more color.
